Lexington is served by the Fayette County Public Schools district. There are five high schools that serve the city, three private schools and several colleges and universities including Asbury College, Asbury Theological Seminary, Berea College, Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Centre College, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown University, Kentucky State University, Lexington Theological Seminary, National College of Business and Technology, Midway College, Sullivan University, Transylvania University and the University of Kentucky.
Transylvania University was the first institution of higher learning west of the Allegheny Mountains. It was chartered in 1780.
